Also, using student clubs even if they are unrelated to the field you’re going in to. You never know who might have a position for you somewhere.

I am a college student who is interested in externship but online resources talking about the difference between externships and internships is rare to find. I agree that the mentor aspect of externship is what makes it so attractive for students as the amount of value gained from the networking would most probably help the student secure a permanent job. I have found some great articles from here to: http://www.externship-vs-internship.blogspot.com

The main reason is the possible future employee. Today, more and more companies try to teach their future employee using special courses that created by same companies. SO, why they don’t include their list of lecture into the lists of college lecture? The key question remains the same: when does it all start functioning and to work productively?

Such an excellent article on making email letters better and efficient.

An email is the “face” of a person who writes it since social network on the Internet became a huge fair of other individuals and their offers and not to lose one’s self, writing emails requires attention and creativity.

Surprisingly having written a letter without any typos and other mistakes one could have already a chance to be noticed. The reason for such statement is a huge amount of spam, and a recipient probably would think you were busy with quantity rather than quality.

If your skills are good enough then you’ll be able to create awesome books, brochures, and marketing materials through word, that’s above and beyond the simple word processing that we’re all doing.

P.s. Why are all comments in caps? why am i yelling?

It needs real effort to write a resume with an objective view on your own skills and experience. It’s better to avoid including irrelevant information. There is no need to write ”I know how to use Microsoft” as this doesn’t add value. Focusing on core skills is a key to catch attention of interviewer. Applying for a job, it is essential to pay attention to the language you use. Avoid samples from the Internet. In most cases, managers don’t read resumes with trashy words from the Internet. To make sure the resume is well-written and unique, don’t forget to check it with online plagiarism checker Without such a trick, the hiring manager might just suppose your resume has been sent by pure accident.

I don’t know where I can get the answer to this question, so, I’m hoping to get some type of guidance. I apologize in advanced for the abrupt question. I (receptionist) was recently shredding the papers at my job (small law firm, around 11-15 employees including myself) and I was able to see how much everyone got for their Christmas bonus from previous years. I accidentally slip up and said something to the other co worker about how much the attorneys got for Christmas bonus. She was kind of in disbelief and said she won’t tell anyone and that the numbers that I gave her must have been for something else. I really love my job and I am afraid that she may say something to someone. What should I do?

Something that I hadn’t considered when I was in high school was going to a community college for two years and then transferring to a 4 year university to finish my last two, but in terms of finances, it would have saved a substantial amount of money while giving me the “same” degree. I also think (like yourself) that a lot of educational value has been lost, compared to when my parents went to college and worked two jobs to be able to go- they genuinely put in the effort and worked really hard whereas these days, I think that often times going to college tends to be “the norm” and what you do after high school. Thanks for your insight!

I am confident that it will give some feeling of relief to many students, who cannot enter some prestigious educational establishments. When I am asked about colleges and their significance, I like telling stories of famous people, you know they are not all graduates of some super expensive school. At the same time there are some many students, who studied in popular colleges, but failed to gain success, most of them were not even able to accomplish thesis and the only way was to find online thesis writers and ordering such papers. To my mind, everything depends on personal desire to study.

I really enjoy reading ideas of young writers. They do not write to impress you or make some profit. Often they simply want to share. Of course it is not as easy when students have to complete some lengthy papers. I do not even blame them for using this page for help since college level writing is a pain. However, writing because you feel inspired is a whole another story. to come up with something breathtaking any artist needs inspiration and same works with essay writing.

Comment on Why Your College Major Does Not Define Your Career by mcl28 https://www.wayup.com/guide/community/why-your-college-major-does-not-define-your-career/#comment-10173 Mon, 06 Jul 2015 07:04:00 +0000 http://www.internmatch.com/blog/?p=2082#comment-10173 Oh my.. Ms. Spear, your article describes me a lot! I’m in this position right now, and I want you to know that your words are very powerful. I graduated with a degree in Biology, but I’m currently working in the Artistic dept. of a certain company here in the Philippines. I’m also getting those side comments from my friends and acquaintances and they’re asking me about my job and how is it related to my major. Of course, its really hard to explain how because they’ll never understand it at first. Even my relatives are also asking me about it. That’s why it’s really hard to just be myself in the work because I know that there’s something that’s holding me back. But I’m happy with my job right now because I get to discover a lot of stuff that’s out of my field such as acting and dancing.

Thanks for your wonderful article. :)

Internship is a great opportunity and it is actually sad so many young and talented students miss this chance. Not all of them understand that getting education is only a first step and there is long road ahead. I was very concerned with the job search already in college however. I even decided to request for essay papers online and work part time to get some work experience. I do not regret this decision since it helped me a lot. Today employers want you to have more than a degree.

Simple things, like this one article (http://www.yti.edu/blog/5-things-you-can-do-to-build-an-ultimate-personal-brand.asp) suggests – like following up with the human resource teams of the prospective employer after you’ve emailed them your resume can go a long way in building your personal brand.

Day.”

Ancient Secrets of Kings…is by far the most fascinating and
powerful program I have ever taken…and I’ve taken them all..

I saw results on the very first day..

I know that sounds cliche…but I
promise you…

I still can’t believe
it…but

I JUST went to the mailbox
and there were two checks for $100 and $150 I wasn’t expecting. Money really
DOES come to me through all types of channels, as I expect it to.

And it has happened a few
times since then…

A speeding ticket payment
got returned to me…yes a speeding ticket payment!

I didn’t even think that
was possible.

The law of attraction never
got me these kinds of results… I always thought I was doing something
wrong…

Apparently…I just needed
Secrets of Kings.. because all the sudden everything started going so smoothly
and naturally…

I’ve gone from just a woman
to a queen…

I’m really starting to see
what it takes to go from just a woman…to a queen…and it’s the most exciting
journey I’ve ever had…

Some of them believe that it will be easy to find a good job once they get a degree. However it is never that easy. A lot of grads spend years to find employment. It can be tough an depressing so you should start worrying about your career already in college. For instance it is possible to use MyCollegeEssayPapers to complete your papers and work part time to gain some experience and understanding. Maybe you will settle with your career choice.

I think that having some experience while you are studying is the best part for students to get a highly paid job after graduation. No employer needs a graduate without any experience, even if his diploma is full of As. I know students who are good in writing essays and college papers and earn their money with CustomEssayWritingService to get experience in copyright and then work as a claimed freelancers traveling all over the world getting good salary for working remote. I think that is the dream of every student, not to waste their time and youth to see everything all over the world and earn money simultaneously.

Congratulations! I definitely understand the rush of finally getting in somewhere after all that hard work, and I agree, that essay can make or break an application. One of the professors that reviewed my application had even pointed out that it was a particular attention to detail, and my ability to ‘show rather than tell’ that won them over in the end.

Beyond just being a good writer though, I think it’s just important to know the strengths of the department you’re seeking to enter. The reason I was rejected from one school was the very same reason I’d been accepted into another. :)

Thanks for sharing as well!

Getting a degree should not be on a whim. Thousands of students try to get into college just to drop out in a few months. Others somehow manage to stay but they simply party for the whole semester and use college paper writing sites all the time. Obviously this kind of education will not do them any good. Today your degree is nothing without knowledge and skills. This is why students should be determined to study hard. If they are lucky some company will notice their effort and offer them a job.

Hi Zabrina,

1) Is hard to remember all of them. I was traveling in Europe that summer and had a lot of time on trains, so I read a bunch of books. Here are the ones I remember:

Lord of the Rings trilogy (started during final semester, finished in summer)
The Art of War
For Whom the Bell Tolls
Siddhartha
Tao Te Ching

2) Nice :)

3) In most workplaces you have to manage your learning curve actively. If you want more esposure to opportunities to learn I think the first step is talking to your boss about your goals and working together to figure out what meetings, talks, etc. might be appropriate for you to listen in on. They should be able to help guide you in a way that makes sense for you and the company.

Hope this helps. If you are reading blogs like this and active enough to ask these questions then my sense is that you are already ahead of the curve. Keep it up.

Best,
Jason

Unfortunately, the workplace brings us many things we don’t want to encounter… like a difficult coworker! I agree with every point you made here, especially the fact that you should keep focused on the job at hand. Feeding into the negativity will ultimately get you nowhere and i think that is a great piece of advice. You have a great voice and I really appreciated your take on this! You are a great writer!

This is a very real risk with highly-technical product managers who don’t also have the non-technical “soft skills” that are required to be a great PM. I’ve seen people break through this bias, and it’s great when they do, but they usually need a good amount of coaching and the proper success opportunities to do so.

Hey Christina – author here. Sorry to confuse you! You should NOT use the BAR as the resume you submit in the job application. This is just a document for you to keep (like a diary). When you’re ready to apply for a job, just like Emily advises, you should pick and pull pieces from the BAR into a real resume (which should be one page max if you have under 10 years of experience). The BAR can be as long and ugly as you make it – just think of it as a tool for creating your end-result resume. Hope this helps!

Christina: I believe having a BAR resume is the material you use to tailor your resume for a position. I agree with having a shorter resume, I have been told by many professors and professional colleagues that 1-page should be the max. So when applying for the job, pick the parts of your resume that are most relevant for that position and condense the rest to be only 1-page.

About this situation. What advice can you give me?? She can also work at another urgent care that the company owns.

That’s a great move — it’s never too early to start getting ahead of your peers. I physically attended college for 2 years before I had to come home and work full time while paying for my last 2 years of tuition (out of my own pocket, mind you). Point blank, it sucked not getting the full “college experience,” but I gained 2 years of full time work experience, something my peers did not have. Some of my friends have never had a job in their lives and we’re a year out of college.

Do exactly as you are: separate yourself from the pack. You will definitely hear “no” a lot, but you WILL find an employer that believes you are everything they are looking for. Good luck and don’t give up!

Now I know why. I kind of expected to have little responses (because I have no experience) but it’s like a ghost town. I’ve applied to less than ten and I already find myself discouraged. I am not one to go around harassing potential employers, though that’s what I’m told I need to do. So i find myself at a crossroads between personality and desperation. Here’s hoping I can work this out! and good luck to you too. It must be hard moving with little prospects.

I would go with the #3 which is a fit for me. No matter what I like to think that big things happen when you repeat doing small good things. Our entire life we look for the perfect or try to give the perfect shape of our life. Is it worth!? Isn’t perfect the life that we already have, our daily 8 hour program!?

Is not enough and because of our education we always strike for more and more. We become robots, we start to manipulate ourselves!

I had similar experiences when I went to Australia for exchange and noticed that the international students who assimilated had a much easier time getting a job- that doesn’t necessarily mean speaking the language 100%, but putting in the effort to understand and be a part of the culture makes a HUGE difference! It will mostly be on the lines of:

Hi Loune,

As an HR Analyst & Internship Coordinator, I think it’s perfectly reasonable to ask for time off due to exams. As a supervisor, we realize your internship should contribute positively to your academic experience, not hinder it. Congrats on your upcoming graduation!

No one was “hating on” anyone (and to be honest, it’s a little irritating to see that phrase trotted out every time a criticism is uttered). This article made it very clear that this particular nonprofit can afford to pay, and made the completely justifiable observation that it’s hypocritical for an organization to seek freebees of this kind when its leitmotif is that women should be insisting on compensation commensurate with the value they bring. You say you don’t have the money to pay interns, and no one is saying you do, or that you should be expected to pony up cash you don’t have. There really is no reason for you or your organization to take this personally. Are all unpaid interns being exploited? I would say no. But is the case described above shameful? It certainly is, in several ways… and there is nothing hateful about saying so.

We understand that nonprofits are the exception to the rule (as the Department of Labor exempts nonprofits from their rules concerning unpaid internships). And many, like yours, it sounds like, offer great unpaid opportunities.

But we do feel that nonprofits that can afford to pay their interns should. Just because nonprofits have the right to hire unpaid workers doesn’t mean they should, especially when considering that many nonprofits offer “internships” that are little more than manual labor, underutilizing great minds and forcing higher turnover (this is the leaky bucket phenomenon mentioned above).

Paying interns is a great way to bring value into your organization, and to set up a funnel for future full-time hires, and we simply encourage organizations not to default to unpaid internships simply because the law says they can.

And let me make it absolutely clear: NONE of us like not paying our interns. Its difficult. We have to compromise on quality of candidates because of this issue. So its not like the management is thrilled about unpaid interns.

Every department in an organization has its own budgets, and they only offer unpaid internships when they genuinely can’t afford to. I run an effective nonprofit, we have 5 interns over the summer who have loved what they have learned from us, and we genuinely don’t have the money to pay them.

Please get your mind out of Silicon Valley intern budgets.

Good point. Some do have connections, however, and their referrals are generally highly regarded. When we spoke with Adam Ward from Facebook back in 2012 he said that many Facebook hires came from referrals from professors. Recruiters like to know who is top of the class!

On the topic of sending a cold email, I would highly recommend people gauge it on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes, choosing to reach out to someone other than a recruiter (co-founder, head of marketing, etc) can have a much greater impact. I also suggest that the “ask” is not for a job, but instead, to get to meet (or get on the phone) with the individual so you can learn more about them and what they do at the company. Express interest in the person and what they are doing, not the possibility of working with them.

While cold emails don’t have an amazing success rate, they can work better than not sending one at all. That said, searching deep within your network for even the most minor of connections could make that initial contact much more powerful. It’s always very impressive when a potential employee finds a way to you other than through a cold email.

Especially when it comes to a momentous decision like a job or a move. However, for personal growth, I hesitate to look back too often to previous entries. I think that it is imperative to choose the “right time” to look back. I think what you describe above to be a truly insightful moment in your life and I applaud your trying to give others a chance to experience that you had. I recommend the sight to look and feel more like a journal. One that invites those who use it to express emotions and intelligent thoughts. You’re on the right track!

I couldn’t agree more with you the the objective line is a waste of time. May colleges are still teaching it as a requirement, but I believe that it is a thing of the past. Also the relevant job explanation is spot on.

You said it yourself, your family supported you and lives here in the city so you had a rent free place to stay. What if your parents didn’t live near or have the money to support you?

Being an intern at such a company brings many benefits. A student will gain a lot of knowledge and experience, which he would then be able to apply at other workplaces. When searching for an internship it’s better to focus on big, well-known, and reputable companies rather than waste your time working for a small local business.

When you get to work on Monday, I’m sure you and your co-workers will be doing the spin to get away from all the press they got this weekend. However, the good news is that a quick complaint to your local employment office, and you should get a few months of min-wage in backpay!

Is the author admitting he has been breaking the law for over three years now?
