A literature major involves reading and analyzing works of literature. This means discussing texts and understanding their historical, cultural and literary significance. As a literature major, you\u2019ll be responsible for understanding and explaining the impact of texts including poems, short stories and novels.<\/p>\n

Is it right for me?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

One of the biggest questions you probably have is how a literature major differs from the more widely-known English major<\/a>. While it depends on the program you\u2019re in, English majors typically take many more classes on a variety of different genres and mediums of writing, whereas literature majors (often called \u201ccomparative literature\u201d majors) focus on literature from either a specific place or theme.<\/p>\n

Regardless, both English and literature majors are extremely reading- and writing-intensive, and you\u2019ll also have to discuss your ideas in all sorts of settings, from lecture halls to seminars.<\/p>\n
